French

French Curriculum Map

At St James', we teach French to all children in Key Stage 2.  We believe that language skills, as well as an awareness and understanding of other cultures, broaden the children's outlook and help them to appreciate the similarities and differences between ourselves and others.  French is taught following the Language Angels scheme of learning.  Lessons initially focus on speaking and listening skills and progress to children reading and writing words, phrases, sentences and paragraphs as they progress through the programme.

Our French curriculum aims to inspire children to apply a range of skills to learn a modern foreign language. By listening and responding to a child-centred scheme of learning, we would like them to be confident enough to have a go at using French when visiting French-speaking countries. Our aim is that, by the time the children leave our school, they will have a good understanding of basic French language in preparation for further study in secondary school.  This will be evident in the children's understanding of the main points of a short passage composed of familiar language in the present tense.
