Design and Technology
What does Design and Technology look like at St James?
Here at St James' we encourage all our children to be risk takers, think creatively and use their initiative during lessons. We try to make DT lessons as exciting as possible, use cross curricular links and utilising our local STEM workshop that is in the town.
We want to give our youngsters the opportunity to explore various concepts and be fully absorbed into each aspect of the curriculum to give purpose, meaning and quality time given to their design work.
Reception Class have been completing lots of work on the Nursery Rhyme Twinkle Twinkle little star. They each designed, planned and created their own rocket using junk modelling. They researched different types of rockets and looked at the common features rockets need. We tried to recreate these key features in our own designs and creations!
We think you have created some wonderful rockets; well done!
Year 5 have been learning about Space.
As part of their Design and Technology lessons they have been looking at different types of pop up books, different designs - v-fold, simple box, double box and different techniques to create 3D elements such as floating box and paper springs.
Here are some of the finished pieces!
Well done Year 5 these look fantastic.
Year 6 have been designing and making their own bags.
First, they looked at how products use different stitches and had to learn how to join materials using a needle and thread.
They designed their own bags and created pattern pieces to use to cut out their designs with felt.
Well done Year 6, fantastic work!
