2025-2026

12th January 2026

Today, we had a visit from a Viking! He taught us about Viking artefacts, told us Viking stories, showed us weapons and how they were used and we even made our own butter! We learned lots but had a really fun day too. Here are some of our pictures.

19th December 2025

Merry Christmas from Year 5! We wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year! See you all in 2026!

17th December 2025

Christmas disco

Here are just a few pictures from our Christmas disco. We all had lots of fun and some of the children had some pretty impressive dance moves. We hope you enjoyed your well deserved treat!

16th December 2025

So proud of our three Year 5’s who were called upon to make up the numbers in the Year 6 nativity during the Christmas carol service. You did us proud and it’s good practice for when you do it again next year.

12th December 2025

Elf dash

Today, we raised money for St Mary’s Hospice by dressing in our elf hats and doing laps of the playground! Some children did over 100 laps in the 45 minutes provided. I was so impressed with your determination and really proud of how everyone took part and did their best! Well done Year 5 elves!

5th December 2026

We visited the Christmas tree festival at St George’s church today. There were over 60 Christmas trees there. We absolutely loved looking at them all and spotting different elements which made each tree special.

3rd December 2025

We have been learning about forces and today, we experimented with buoyancy. We made tin foil boats and tested to see how many coins the boats could hold before they sank. Here are some of our photos.

November 2025

Today, we got to practice our rugby skills with Barrow Raiders. It was a freezing cold day but, despite that, the children dug in and worked hard, doing everything they were asked to do and more. Proud of you Year 5!

October 2025

We were lucky enough to go and watch the REACT science show at Millom School today! There were all sorts of experiments, explosions and even flames! The children loved learning all about science today and were eager to let their families know what they have seen in today’s show.

26th September 2025

Today, we raised money for charity by coming into school with ‘bad hair’. Here are some of the children with their crazy hairstyles! I loved seeing them, you are a very creative bunch - well done Year 5!

3rd September 2025

First day in Year 5 and what a lovely day it has been. Welcome to you all, I can’t wait for us to start all the wonderful activities we will be to do together this year!

Monday 23rd September 2024

What a wonderful day of poetry we have had today. Andy Tooze (the poet from the Peaks) has visited us and shared some of his poetry. He also led a workshop in our class where he challenged us to write and perform our own poems about our hobbies. As you can see the children loved every minute of it.

July 2024

another fantastic year in Year 5. Here are just some of the highlights. Wishing everyone a wonderful (and hopefully dry and sunny) summer x

Monday 3rd June

We explored the Coniston CopperValley for our geography field trip today. It was a bit drizzly but we didn’t let it dampen our spirits! We learned about the mining history and geology of the area and got to explore the scenery and even a mine! What a great day!

Tuesday 16th April - Earth day activity

Earth Day is an annual event where people celebrate and aim to learn more about to help protect our planet. The theme for this year was 'Planet v’s Plastic'. As a school, we learned about the different challenges facing our planet and participated in a variety of activities to help us to learn more about how we can do our bit to help reduce plastic waste and help our planet.

Year 5 created slow writing paragraphs about ocean plastic pollution. Also, as a school, we also managed to raise a fantastic £110 for Cumbria Wildlife Trust by wearing green or blue for Earth day! Brilliant! Thank you to everyone that donated.

Monday 26th February

We have learning about climate change and about Greta Thunberg. We created posters to highlight the challenges we face and the ways we can help our planet.

Wednesday 8th November

Yesterday, we were very kindly gifted with a lovely book about remembrance. Here it is, being read aloud by Harry. Also, Orla has drawn a lovely picture at home about remembrance too (it was so good I just had to share it). X

Tuesday 7th November - Ancient Greek Hero Workshop

Today we had a visit (from Imagine History) to teach us all about Ancient Greek myths and heroes. We all participated in a variety of drama activities and tasks to help us to become great heroes (like Perseus and Theseus).

Here are some pictures of our day, it was so much fun!

Thursday 6th July

As the academic year draws to a close, here is a video including some of our highlights. As you can see it has been a lot of fun but also very busy (we have packed so much in). We wish our Year 5 a wonderful and relaxing summer and the best of luck as they move into Year 6.

Monday 5th June

As part of our mountain topic, Year 5 had a field trip to the Copper Valley at Coniston. We learned all about the geology of the area and what life might have been like as a miner. In the hay day of the mines, children as young as 6 might be found working in the mines. We saw large piles of slate and orangey rocks alongside the track - evidence of Coniston’s mining past. We learned so much but still found time for a paddle in the river. Here are a few of our pictures from the day.

25th May

Today we looked at relief maps in geography. We learned about contours on OS maps and we looked at how the lines become closer together on steeper hills and further apart on gentler slopes. We also linked contour maps with hill profiles to help us make connections and comparisons. Here we are making some 3D contour models - didn’t they turn out brilliantly.

May 15th

As part of our mountain topic, we had a visit from a geologist (Steve). It was a fantastic opportunity to hear (and see) some of his adventures - he saw a volcano come to life! We learned all about different types of rock, how mountains form and how volcanoes erupt. What a day!

21st March

World Poetry Day

Today is World Poetry Day and we came together as a school to celebrate the occasion. Each class performed a poem for the rest of the school to enjoy. Our poem ‘Rollercoaster’ was written by Mrs Johnson and the children were absolutely outstanding when they performed it. You really do us proud Year 5!

February 2023 - Our Science topic for this half term is 'Changing Materials'. We have been looking at electrical conductors and insulators and testing which materials have these properties.

January 2023 - Viking Day - Our Viking day was fantastic! We learned so much and the children had so much fun. Here are a few of our pictures

January 2023 - This half term, we are really enjoying our gymnastics at Millom Recreation Centre. The children have been working on the apparatus. Here we are tackling the beam!

December 2022 - We had a great trip to Manchester to watch Peter Pan! It was fabulous!

September 2022 - We've had a great day in Year 5 today being engineers! This is the start of our Science unit in the Earth in Space! We did lots of investigating and then planned how we would land an astronaut safely on Mars! We constructed our ideas, keeping within a budget and put them to the test! Well done Year 5!!

June 2022 - What a fabulous trip to Muncaster we had. Camping was so much fun!!

What a fabulous trip to Muncaster we had. Camping was so much fun!!

Well done to our Year 5 children for completing their Bikeability this Month - a great achievement.

May 2022 - We have been busy measuring angles today in Year 5. We used masking tape on the desks to create the different angles. As you can see, they were doing a fantastic job.

February 2022 - Small sided games in Netball to practice marking and finding space.

February 2022 - As part of our Viking topic, we have been creating dragon eyes (drawing and clay). They are inspired by the dragon figurehead’s which were often seen on Viking long ships.

We kicked off anti-bullying week with Odd Socks Day. This reminded us all that it's ok to be different!

This Remembrance day, we took part in a minutes silence in our bubble. We also completed some art work and made a joint display for the school playground. Lest we forget.

In Computing, we have been learning about programming - devising and debugging algorithms and working out how to make our Micro:bits count votes in a poll, display a short animation and show different screens. The focus in these lessons has been amazing!

As part of our science work on Earth and Space, we were thinking about how the Earth's rotation affects how our shadows look during the course of the day. We used torches and moved them to replicate the Earth's rotation and observed how the shadows changed. We learnt lots.

The children really enjoyed their day in Ancient Greece. They did tea bag pottery, created mythical creatures, competed in the ancient Olympics and enjoyed an ancient Greek feast!

In small groups, Year 5 have been learning some Yoga to help with their general wellbeing. These sessions have been very popular!

We have been using counters to help us to understand exchange when adding and subtracting in Maths.

The children enjoyed making and refining their stop motion animations in Computing.

In Art this term, we have been looking at the work of Hannah Hock. We have created collages, refined our use of line and tone in drawing, complete detailed pictures of eyes and had great fun!
