Reception
2025 - 2026
Welcome to Reception Class page with Mrs Varley!
Here I will share with you a little insight into what we get up to in Reception Class.
Autumn Term
Welcome to Reception class. This half term we have enjoyed settling into our new classroom, learning new routines, exploring our new space and getting to know each other. We have enjoyed activities both outside and inside the classroom, making autumn pictures, building with large equipment and playing in our role play areas. We have been reading the story 'The Colour Monster' we have enjoyed exploring emotions and creating our own colour monsters and jars. We have spent lots of time exploring all areas of the classroom and learning about each other.
In Maths we have been looking at sorting and finding things that are the same and different and looking at pairs. We have started learning our first few sounds following the Read Write Inc scheme and have enjoyed meeting Fred the frog and playing games with him.
We have been enjoying our Celebration of the Word times recently!
The children are getting very good at making a circle when the quiet music plays. They enjoy taking it in turns to set the focus in the middle and are getting very reflective on the stories and messages they hear.
Here we are working on the story of creation. We used a large piece of wall paper and each drew something we thought was beautiful in Gods world. We all thought of some lovely ideas and we discussed ways we can help protect and look after Gods world.
We have explored how to travel to Space and enjoyed junk modelling to create our own rockets. We explored what an astronaut might need in Space and read how to catch a star and thought of new ways we could catch a star.
We have also started using Drawing Club in Reception Class and are very excited to start exploring more stories, tales and clips. Everyone is enjoying learning new vocabulary and using their imaginations to create new ideas. The use of a magic pen and codes has been very excited and motivated everyone to write. We have read the story Aliens love underpants, a video clip of Old Bear and Toys in Space.
We have been working on the RE unit Galilee to Jerusalem. In this unit we have been thinking about how to behave more like Jesus and look after everyone around us. We have learnt the Glory be and listened to the stories of how Jesus welcomed the children and how he fed the 5000.

What an excellent start to the Spring Term in Reception class.
We have been learning all about 'Space'. We started our T4W unit - 'Twinkle twinkle little star' and we have enjoyed innovating and creating our own story maps and we have even recorded ourselves saying the new rhymes. Some lovely imaginative ideas shared well done. Here is one of our class members sharing her new rhyme 'Scary Scary Witch'.
As part of our 'Space' theme we have been exploring Vincent Van Gough's starry night art work. We have created our own versions of the famous painting using chalk and pastels. We are very proud with the outcome.
This week we have been celebrating the County wide initiative of Story telling week and have been enjoying a Teddy Bears sleep over. We have had guest readers in to share their favourite stories with the children as well as enjoying a PJ day. We made our own Teddy Bears Picnic and then left our Teddy's at school for a sleep over. We invited our parents in to share stories with each other too. I also set the children a challenge at home to find an unusual place to read a book and parents had to capture a photo to share with us. There have been some wonderful ideas.
It has been a wonderful week full of love for reading.
