Art and Design

What does Art and Design at St James’ look like?

At St James’, our intention is to inspire creativity and individuality whilst developing our little artists' experiences of art, knowledge of artists, and developing their artistic skills and techniques.

In our school, we want our children to love art, to be inspired, to experiment, to be challenged, be reflective, and become artists, designers, graphic designers or architects.

How are we 'making our mark'?

We want to give our little artists the opportunity to explore various mediums and be fully submerged into each aspect of art and design, giving them time to consider, and create quality pieces of artwork.

With all of this in mind, we have developed our rolling curriculum, schemes of work and progression of skills to ensure that each of the art and design elements is studied in depth and the children experience these several times throughout the Key Stage.

At St James’ we follow a ‘research- study an artist- learn new skills- create a final piece- and evaluate’ structure for each of our topics.

We encourage, and empower, all of our staff to plan their individual art curriculum to fit their class needs and topics. Art is incorporated across our curriculum, however, is taught as an individual lesson each week. Every class has a medium-term overview of intended learning outcomes, alongside the progression of skills. Throughout the school we produce some amazing artwork which we display throughout, including at our Annual Art Gallery Evening.

All of our children will experience all mediums of art throughout the year, explore the use of sketchbooks to record and analyse, gain a sound knowledge of different artists, developing ideas and skills whilst being evaluative.

In our school, we teach art and design passionately with the hope that every child will ‘make their mark’.
