Year 5

2023 - 2024

Monday 26th February

We have learning about climate change and about Greta Thunberg. We created posters to highlight the challenges we face and the ways we can help our planet.

Wednesday 8th November

Yesterday, we were very kindly gifted with a lovely book about remembrance. Here it is, being read aloud by Harry. Also, Orla has drawn a lovely picture at home about remembrance too (it was so good I just had to share it). X

Tuesday 7th November - Ancient Greek Hero Workshop

Today we had a visit (from Imagine History) to teach us all about Ancient Greek myths and heroes. We all participated in a variety of drama activities and tasks to help us to become great heroes (like Perseus and Theseus).

Here are some pictures of our day, it was so much fun!

Thursday 6th July

As the academic year draws to a close, here is a video including some of our highlights. As you can see it has been a lot of fun but also very busy (we have packed so much in). We wish our Year 5 a wonderful and relaxing summer and the best of luck as they move into Year 6.

Monday 5th June

As part of our mountain topic, Year 5 had a field trip to the Copper Valley at Coniston. We learned all about the geology of the area and what life might have been like as a miner. In the hay day of the mines, children as young as 6 might be found working in the mines. We saw large piles of slate and orangey rocks alongside the track - evidence of Coniston’s mining past. We learned so much but still found time for a paddle in the river. Here are a few of our pictures from the day.

25th May

Today we looked at relief maps in geography. We learned about contours on OS maps and we looked at how the lines become closer together on steeper hills and further apart on gentler slopes. We also linked contour maps with hill profiles to help us make connections and comparisons. Here we are making some 3D contour models - didn’t they turn out brilliantly.

May 15th

As part of our mountain topic, we had a visit from a geologist (Steve). It was a fantastic opportunity to hear (and see) some of his adventures - he saw a volcano come to life! We learned all about different types of rock, how mountains form and how volcanoes erupt. What a day!

21st March

World Poetry Day

Today is World Poetry Day and we came together as a school to celebrate the occasion. Each class performed a poem for the rest of the school to enjoy. Our poem ‘Rollercoaster’ was written by Mrs Johnson and the children were absolutely outstanding when they performed it. You really do us proud Year 5!

February 2023 - Our Science topic for this half term is 'Changing Materials'. We have been looking at electrical conductors and insulators and testing which materials have these properties.

January 2023 - Viking Day - Our Viking day was fantastic! We learned so much and the children had so much fun. Here are a few of our pictures

January 2023 - This half term, we are really enjoying our gymnastics at Millom Recreation Centre. The children have been working on the apparatus. Here we are tackling the beam!

December 2022 - We had a great trip to Manchester to watch Peter Pan! It was fabulous!

September 2022 - We've had a great day in Year 5 today being engineers! This is the start of our Science unit in the Earth in Space! We did lots of investigating and then planned how we would land an astronaut safely on Mars! We constructed our ideas, keeping within a budget and put them to the test! Well done Year 5!!

June 2022 - What a fabulous trip to Muncaster we had. Camping was so much fun!!

What a fabulous trip to Muncaster we had. Camping was so much fun!!

Well done to our Year 5 children for completing their Bikeability this Month - a great achievement.

May 2022 - We have been busy measuring angles today in Year 5. We used masking tape on the desks to create the different angles. As you can see, they were doing a fantastic job.

February 2022 - Small sided games in Netball to practice marking and finding space.

February 2022 - As part of our Viking topic, we have been creating dragon eyes (drawing and clay). They are inspired by the dragon figurehead’s which were often seen on Viking long ships.

We kicked off anti-bullying week with Odd Socks Day. This reminded us all that it's ok to be different!

This Remembrance day, we took part in a minutes silence in our bubble. We also completed some art work and made a joint display for the school playground. Lest we forget.

In Computing, we have been learning about programming - devising and debugging algorithms and working out how to make our Micro:bits count votes in a poll, display a short animation and show different screens. The focus in these lessons has been amazing!

As part of our science work on Earth and Space, we were thinking about how the Earth's rotation affects how our shadows look during the course of the day. We used torches and moved them to replicate the Earth's rotation and observed how the shadows changed. We learnt lots.

The children really enjoyed their day in Ancient Greece. They did tea bag pottery, created mythical creatures, competed in the ancient Olympics and enjoyed an ancient Greek feast!

In small groups, Year 5 have been learning some Yoga to help with their general wellbeing. These sessions have been very popular!

We have been using counters to help us to understand exchange when adding and subtracting in Maths.

The children enjoyed making and refining their stop motion animations in Computing.

In Art this term, we have been looking at the work of Hannah Hock. We have created collages, refined our use of line and tone in drawing, complete detailed pictures of eyes and had great fun!
